The Breathalyzer 900 and 900A were used from the 1950's to 1990's. It was operated by using chemicals within two ampoules designed to measure a subject’s blood alcohol level (BAC). The driver blew into a tube attached to the machine, which mixed the breath sample with the chemical.
The reaction enabled the Breathalyzer to determine the alcohol content of the driver’s breath, which it converted to the subject’s BAC. The machine then printed the results.
